Dear Readers,
The journey of Modern CosmEthics has always been guided by a simple yet demanding principle: cosmetic science must be grounded in evidence. Since the publication of the Modern Cosmetics book and the launch of the CosmEthically ACTIVE Journal, our mission has remained unchanged: to bring reliable, scientifically sound knowledge closer to you.
With each new volume of the CosmEthically ACTIVE Journal, we move forward with intention. True progress arises from disciplined creativity, where inspiration is supported by data and innovation is guided by scientific reasoning, regulatory awareness, and ethical responsibility.
This new volume continues along this path.
First, we present some back-to-basics topics, strengthening the foundations of cosmetic formulation and product development. We focus on regulatory essentials in the European Union, providing a clear and practical overview of the product information file and cosmetic product safety report, as well as the often underestimated but critical documentation required for cosmetic raw materials. Later, the ever-relevant perspective on natural in cosmetics, frequently misunderstood or oversimplified, is discussed, while also highlighting the importance of ingredient quality, traceability, and authenticity.
This volume further explores ingredients and concepts that connect tradition with modern cosmetic science. From popular and multifunctional actives such as niacinamide, arbutin and aescin, to hydrolates and aromatherapy-inspired approaches, these articles offer insight into their mechanisms of action, benefits and limitations, connecting scientific research with real formulation practice.
As always, our goal is not to provide ready-made answers, but to encourage critical thinking, informed creativity and continuous learning. We believe that high-quality cosmetics do not result from shortcuts, but from understanding fundamentals, respecting complexity and making conscious choices at every step of product development.
And finally, on behalf of the Modern CosmEthics team I would like to express my sincere “thank you” to all the authors who contributed their expertise and dedication to this volume, as well as to our trusted partners whose support makes the publication of the CosmEthically ACTIVE Journal possible. Their commitment to quality, transparency and ethical practice closely aligns with our own values.
Dear Readers, what truly drives us forward is knowing that this work resonates with you. You who care deeply about doing cosmetic science the right way.
Sending you CosmEthically ACTIVE wishes.
